Six hundred people in the Round saw Daniel Adon step onto the Stone to face his father that morning.
He was the golden child, his father's heir, and he had come as champion for the House accusing Judge Gideon Adon of murder and demanding justice by the only means left to them: trial by combat. By the end of the hour the Ruling Judge of the Seventy was dead — lawfully, publicly, at the hand of his own son.
His younger brother, Caleb, was in the Round that day, seated with the rest of his family. When Daniel moved to strike, he half rose to shout a warning, and the shout died in his throat. He sat back down.
Now an old man in his seventies, he is writing it all down: how his brother came to kill their father, how a world that outlawed kings a thousand years ago let one rise, and what it cost the one man who set out to stop him.
