Long bio

About 150 words. For a feature, a guest post or a show page.

R. John Walker writes science fiction about families and power. His debut novel, The Bramble King, opens The Brothers, a trilogy about a man who sets out to make himself king of a civilization spanning the stars, called the Reach, where kings have been outlawed for a thousand years. The story is told decades later by the younger brother who could have stopped him.

Walker was nine when Star Wars reached theaters, and what stayed with him was the idea of a story told in nine parts, beginning in the middle. Blade Runner finished the job in 1982. He has read widely ever since, from Narnia and Dune to Red Rising, The Expanse, The Martian and Project Hail Mary.

Writing turned from a hobby into a calling on his way into his sixties. By day he is an analyst for an insurance company. Most evenings he is in his office, lost in the Reach. He lives in Virginia with his wife of more than twenty-five years.

A man sets out to make himself king of a civilization spanning the stars, called the Reach, where kings have been outlawed for a thousand years, and only his brother can try to stop him.

Six hundred people in the Round watched Daniel Adon step onto the Stone as champion for the House accusing his father, the Ruling Judge, of murder. By the end of the hour his father was dead, lawfully and publicly, at his son's hand. His younger brother, Caleb, now an old man, is writing it all down: how it happened, how the Reach, where kings had been outlawed for a thousand years, let one rise, and what it cost the one man who set out to stop him.
